In memory of the Munich massacre victims: A new memorial to open at the Olympic Village

05 September 2017

The 45th anniversary of the Munich Summer Olympics Massacre, a terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 11 Israeli athletes, will be commemorated this year in a special ceremony, with an expected official announcement of a new museum dedicated to the victims’ memory.  Attending the September 6 ceremony will be President of Israel Reuven Rivlin, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, officials from the International and Israeli Olympic Committees, survivors of the massacre and members of the victims’ families.

The announcement of the new museum follows a lengthy campaign by Ilana Romano, the widow of weightlifter Yosef Romano, and Ankie Spitzer, the widow of fencer Andre Spitzer, for a significant memorial on German soil. The campaign took off in recent years thanks to the support of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bavarian Minister of Culture and Sports Dr. Ludwig Spaenle, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
