PM Netanyahu's Visit to Australia: What Should We Expect? Interview with Professor Ephraim Inbar

21 February 2017 Hadassah Schwarz

For the first time in history, a sitting Israeli Prime Minister will visit Australia.  Professor Ephraim Inbar, an expert on Israel-Australia relations from Bar Ilan University says that Israel and Australia share many common values. "There is much we can cooperate on," he says.  "Both states are affected by the retreat of American power, the rise of China, the spread of radical Islam and desertification."
"Australia and Israel have a warm relationship.  In addition to the bond of their common values, both countries well remember the important Australian military contribution in the land of Israel in 1917 during WWII."
What is the historic significance to the visit?
"Every visit of an acting prime minister is a chance to strengthen the relationship between the two countries. The visit of Prime Minister Netanyahu is especially significant because it is the first visit of an acting Israeli Prime Minister to Australia. Cyber, military technology and the military industries in general are a topic both countries are interested in."
What, in your opinion will be considered a successful visit?
"A successful visit will be if trade and military ties between Israel and Australia are tightened. Securing Australian support in international organizations is also very important."
